NI Guitar Rig Pro 6
I nearly fell off my chair when I saw that Native Instruments have finally – after what feels like an eternity – announced that there will be a new version of Guitar Rig! I’m one of those people that has been using Guitar Rig since it was first released. Honestly, I thought Native Instruments had written it off.
What is the best guitar VST you need to try? As a guitar-specific tool, IK Multimedia’s Amplitube 4 is the one to beat. While Positive Grid’s BIAS AMP 2 arguably wins out purely on sound quality, the added effects and other tools make Amplitube 4 the full package. GUITAR RIG 5 PRO is the ultimate software solution for perfect custom tone with more amps, more effects and more creative potential than ever before, all in a powerful and intuitive virtual effects rack. S-Gear is a collection of guitar amps, speaker cabinets and effects implemented in software for use with your computer, Windows PC or MAC. The software comes as a Standalone Application and as plug-ins.
So I’m sure you can imagine my excitement that we will soon see a new, redesigned and updated version. This bit of news made my day because GR was my go-to virtual amp sim for so many years. Unfortunately, it had become a little unstable and seemed quite outdated. It felt like NI had forgotten all us guitar and bass players.
Ok so, I have Guitar Rig 4 and it is not showing up in my VST I've done some research and know that the Guitar rig VST should be saved in a specified path c programfiles steinberg VSTplugins and have saved it in this path however it is still not there. An update for a modern guitarist?
Alongside all the legacy modules, amps, cabinets and effects, Guitar Rig 6 will bring new amps, new cabinets and more effects, along with an updated user interface and re-programmed Intelligent Circuit Modelling engine running all these new virtual guitar rigs.
This looks like a full-scale re-write, so I’m expecting big things. GR5 was getting long in the tooth and hadn’t been holding up well against the competition. After all, IK’s Amplitube and Line 6’s Helix Native have been crushing it for years now. Meanwhile, Guitar Rig had not been getting much love from NI in recent years.

New Amps and more
So what’s new? The new virtual amps include Chicago, billed as a rare mid-50s combo amp, Bass Invader, a vintage solid state bass amp and Fire Breather, a hand-wired American boutique amp based on a modded British classic. Also added to GR6 is Rammfire, designed with Rammstein’s Richard Z. Kruspe and based on the Pre-500 Dual Rectifier Amp. Along with new and improved cabinet sounds provided by the Matched Cabinet Pro feature, all this sounds pretty darn promising.
The new effects are feature a set called Crush Pack, that incorporates a frequency shifter, bit crusher and distortion effects. Mod Pack has all the classic chorus, phaser and flangers, while Raum offers what NI is calling a “do-it-all creative reverb” that can go from subtle, simple reverbs to extreme spaces.
Head on over to the official page to check out all the new features. If NI can pull this update off, it could be epic. One question: I wonder if my old NI Rig Kontroller will still work…
