What are the differences between these different versions VST VST3 and RTAS. Note that if you are developing a new plug-in and if you are using the VST 2 wrapper included in the SDK you do not need to use convertVST2UIDToFUID, a VST 2 specific vendor call allows the host (Steinberg hosts since Cubase 4.0) to get from a VST 2 version a VST 3 UID.

I am a bit confused with the state of VST and maybe someone can shade some light.
As far as I understand the state of the affair
  • There are also times when VST 3 versions of certain plugins may have some quirky behavior or even crash, whereas their VST 2 versions do not. Arturia had some of that with some of their V Collection synths a while back. Sonar will hide the VST 2 versions, by default, if there is a VST 3 version available.
  • The VST 2 Whitelist opens as a text document in your standard text editor. Enter the file name of the desired VST plug-in without file name extension. Please strictly comply with the spelling and case of the original file name. Start a new line for each VST2 plug-in you like to add to your whitelist. Save the document. (Windows: Ctrl + S, Mac.
  • An increasing number of plugins have both VST2 and VST3 versions, and often, unlike 32 and 64 bit versions, you're often not given the choice of which to install, so you get both. Net effect is that S1 sees both, and both are available in my plugin lists.

* what is commonly called VST is in fact VST2.4
* the 'latest' version of VST is called VST3 and is not backward compatible with VST2.4
What Is The Difference Between Vst 2 And Vst3 Plugin* VST3 was released almost 10 years ago (Jan 17 2008) [https://www.steinberg.net/en/company/pr .. 3_sdk.html]
* It is very hard to find or even download VST2.4 anymore (documentation, sdk, etc..).
* Reason only supports VST 2.4
Why is it so f*ed up?
Why is it that after 10 years people are still writing and releasing VST2.4 plugin?
Does VST3 suck? Has it not been embraced by the developers?
How are developers writing VST2.4 plugin without documentation and/or sdk?

What is the difference between VST2 and VST3? Some of my third part plug ins offer both versions and thus far I've stuck to VST2. Does Studio One 3 Professional support both?

Yes, it supports both. As relates to automation.. right clicking on controls to add or destroy envelopes (vst3).. and it also plays nicely with Studio One's track mode (mono/stereo) switching in that they can switch channels when the numbers of channels on the track change.
I can't think of anything else that would matter between them, in Studio One anyway.
(Edit.. sidechain is also easier to setup in vst3 plugins, forgot about that)

Out of 'force of habit' I employ 3 over 2 unless I have no alternative.

VST3 tend to be buggier than their VST2 counterparts however. This has been true for Slate, U-he, and a few other companies. I believe I read somewhere that the JUICE framework in particular doesn't get on well with VST3, so some developers will tell offer a VST3 version and tell you not to use it, others won't even offer one at all.
Me, I stick to the VST2 versions just to be safe. If VST3 plugins were equally as stable, I'd consider changing, but for now there's little real-world benefit to that format over it's more widely supported and better-documented predecessor.
